Thomas Bayes' essay setting out a rule, now called Bayes' theorem, for calculating the probability of a cause from an observed effect. Found among Bayes' papers after his death, it was prepared for publication and communicated to the Royal Society by his friend Richard Price and published in volume 53 of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, pages 370 to 418.
