The Doppler effect is the change in frequency of a wave in relation to an observer who is moving relative to the wave source, commonly heard as the change in pitch of a passing siren.

Doppler first proposed this effect in 1842 in his treatise Uber das farbige Licht der Doppelsterne und einiger anderer Gestirne des Himmels (On the coloured light of the binary stars and some other stars of the heavens).
