The ampere is the base unit of electric current in the International System of Units, named for the French physicist Andre-Marie Ampere. It is defined by fixing the value of the elementary charge, the charge carried by a single proton, at exactly 1.602176634 times ten to the minus nineteen coulombs, so a current of one ampere is the flow of that many elementary charges past a point every second, tying the unit directly to a fixed constant of nature rather than to a laboratory apparatus.
