The California Institute of Technology, known as Caltech, is a private research university in Pasadena, California, which began in 1891 as Throop University and took its present name in 1920. A small school with a strong emphasis on physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology and engineering, it counts many Nobel laureates among its faculty and alumni and manages the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for NASA.
