The Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg is a public research university in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, formed in 1817 by joining the University of Wittenberg, founded in 1502, with the University of Halle, founded in 1694. Georg Cantor, who created set theory, taught at Halle.
