The Karolinska Institute is a medical university in Solna, just outside Stockholm, founded in 1810 by King Charles XIII of Sweden originally to train army surgeons. It is now one of Europe's largest and most respected medical research institutions and, since 1901, its faculty's Nobel Assembly has selected the laureates of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, one of the six categories the Nobel Prize institution now covers.
