Lund Observatory was the official English name for the astronomy department at Lund University and is now used for a network of researchers in astronomy and space-related research, administered by the Department of Physics. From 1867 to 2001 it was also the name of the observatory building, now called the Lund Old Observatory. The institution was founded in 1749 and was preceded by an observatory built by the astronomy professor Anders Spole in 1672, which was destroyed in the Battle of Lund in 1676. Its research focuses on observational and theoretical astrophysics, including the Milky Way, galaxy formation and exoplanets.
