Columbia University, chartered in 1754 as King's College, became the institutional home of American academic anthropology when Franz Boas joined its faculty in 1896 and built the discipline's first PhD program in the United States. Boas trained the generation of American anthropologists who carried his methods into the field, including Margaret Mead, and Columbia's department remained a center of the discipline through the twentieth century.
