Eugene Paul Wigner was a Hungarian-American theoretical physicist and mathematician. He introduced group theory into quantum mechanics and developed fundamental symmetry principles used to describe the behavior of atomic nuclei and elementary particles. He received the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the theory of the atomic nucleus and the elementary particles, particularly through the discovery and application of fundamental symmetry principles, sharing the award with Maria Goeppert Mayer and J. Hans D. Jensen.
