Edward Morley was an American chemist known for his exacting laboratory measurements, including a precise determination of the atomic weight of oxygen. In 1887 he joined physicist Albert Michelson in the Michelson-Morley experiment, contributing the measurement discipline needed to detect motion through the hypothesized luminiferous aether. The experiment found no such motion, a result that later proved influential to the development of special relativity.
