Hans Momsen was a North Frisian farmer, mathematician and astronomer who lived in the Duchy of Schleswig under Danish-Norwegian rule. Entirely self-taught, without university study, he was able to solve complex mathematical calculations and construct astronomical devices, chronometers and other precision instruments. He also worked as a surveyor, built a church organ and gave lessons in mathematics to gifted students, and is remembered as a polymath.
