Igor Yevgenyevich Tamm was a Soviet physicist. With Ilya Frank, he developed the theoretical explanation of the Cherenkov effect that had been observed by Pavel Cherenkov, work for which the three shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics. Tamm also predicted the existence of the phonon and helped propose the tokamak design later used in efforts to achieve controlled thermonuclear fusion.
