Keren Rice

Keren D. Rice is a Canadian linguist born in 1949 who is professor of linguistics at the University of Toronto and directs its Centre for Aboriginal Initiatives. She earned her PhD from the University of Toronto in 1976 with a dissertation on Hare phonology, and her scholarship spans theoretical and Native American linguistics with particular focus on Athabaskan languages, including sustained work documenting, maintaining and revitalizing Slavey, an Indigenous language spoken in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Her research has addressed phonological markedness and the interaction of phonology, morphology and semantics; she was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2005 and of the Linguistic Society of America in 2009, served as president of the Society in 2012, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2013.
