Kip Thorne is an American theoretical physicist at the California Institute of Technology whose work on the theory of gravitational waves and how a detector would see them helped found the LIGO project alongside Rainer Weiss. He shared the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves.
