Paul D. Boyer was an American biochemist and professor of chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles. He shared the 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for research explaining the enzymatic mechanism of ATP synthase, the enzyme underlying the biosynthesis of adenosine triphosphate, an honor he split with John E. Walker; the remaining half of that year prize went to Jens C. Skou for a separate discovery.
