Peter D. Mitchell

Peter Dennis Mitchell was a British biochemist awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1978 for his chemiosmotic theory, which explained how cells use a proton gradient across a membrane to drive the synthesis of ATP. His theory overturned the prevailing view of cellular energy production and became the accepted framework for understanding respiration and photosynthesis at the molecular level.
