Roger Shuy

Roger Shuy is an American linguist born January 5, 1931, in Akron, Ohio, who taught at Wheaton College from 1958 to 1964 and Michigan State University from 1964 to 1967 before joining Georgetown University in 1968, where he founded the sociolinguistics program and retired in 1998 as distinguished research professor emeritus of linguistics. He specializes in sociolinguistics and forensic linguistics, and since retiring has published fourteen books on forensic linguistics while working on roughly five hundred legal cases and testifying in more than fifty trials across twenty six states, including the Abscam investigation of Senator Harrison Williams and the narcotics case against automobile executive John DeLorean. He helped found the organization New Ways of Analyzing Variation, served as the second president of the American Association of Applied Linguistics, and was elected a fellow of the Linguistic Society of America in 2009.
