Shrinivas Ramchandra Kulkarni is an Indian American astronomer born October 4, 1956, who holds a professorship in astronomy and planetary science at the California Institute of Technology and previously directed the Caltech Optical Observatory, overseeing the Palomar and Keck telescopes. His research spans the interstellar medium, pulsars, brown dwarfs, soft gamma ray repeaters, gamma ray bursts and optical transients, and he is a fellow of the Royal Society and a member of several national academies. He received the 2024 Shaw Prize in Astronomy.
