The Royal Society is the national academy of sciences of the United Kingdom and the oldest scientific institution in continuous existence. It grew out of informal gatherings of natural philosophers in London and Oxford in the 1640s, sometimes called the Invisible College, and was formally constituted in 1660 with a royal charter following in 1662. It has no single founder; its founding members included Robert Boyle, Christopher Wren, and John Wilkins among a dozen others present at the first meeting. Its journal, Philosophical Transactions, begun in 1665, is credited with pioneering the practice of external, pre-publication review that became peer review, and its motto, Nullius in verba, roughly take nobody's word for it, states the empirical commitment the atlas's concept entries return to repeatedly.
