Gerty Theresa Cori, born Gerty Radnitz in Prague in 1896 and died in 1957, was a Czech and American biochemist who studied carbohydrate metabolism together with her husband, Carl Ferdinand Cori. Their research identified glucose 1-phosphate, known as the Cori ester, and worked out the Cori cycle, the pathway by which glycogen breaks down into lactic acid in muscle and is resynthesized into glucose in the liver. In 1947 she became the first woman awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, sharing the honor with her husband and with Bernardo Houssay, and was the third woman overall to win a Nobel Prize in a scientific field.
