Roger Blandford

Roger David Blandford is a British theoretical astrophysicist born August 28, 1949 in Grantham, England, best known for his work on black holes. He is known for the Blandford-Znajek process, which explains how rotating black holes can power relativistic jets, for a further mechanism of jet formation through hydromagnetic winds from accretion disks, and for the Blandford-Konigl conical jet model used to predict the radio properties of jets, and he also extended blast wave solutions to the ultra-relativistic limit important to supernova research. He received the 2020 Shaw Prize in Astronomy.
