Statistical mechanics explains the bulk thermodynamic properties of matter, temperature, pressure, entropy, as statistical consequences of the mechanics of the enormous numbers of atoms or molecules a body is built from, rather than treating heat as a substance in its own right. Ludwig Boltzmann built the framework across his career, connecting atomic and molecular behaviour to large-scale material properties through probability theory, developing it independently of Josiah Willard Gibbs, whose own systematic treatment of the same connection, arrived at separately, gave the field the name it carries today. The two men's independent routes to the same programme are why statistical mechanics has no single founding moment credited to either alone.
